Capturing timelapse video on your Android smartphone

Last week we showed you how to capture time-lapse video on your iPhone and iOS devices. This week we will be showing you several apps that will allow you to do the same on your Android smartphone. Depending on which Android smartphone you have, you may find that it already has a time-lapse feature built into the camera up, such as on the Samsung Galaxy S6 or LG G4, but what I will be doing in this blog, is demonstrating a number of free apps that will work universally across Android smartphones.

Lapse It

Lapse It has been available on the Google Play Store for several years now, and is currently on version 4.7. A highly rated app, Lapse It comes with a host of manual controls, the most important of which being the ability to choose your own frame rate for capturing images. Lapse It has a "background mode" which allows you to access other apps whilst you are recording footage, but if you want to capture stable time-lapse videos, you will want to keep your phone is still as possible.

TimeLapse

For great quality time-lapse videos with a minimal amount of effort, the aptly named TimeLapse is worth a look. Simply set the interval and resolution at which you would like the app to take photos and you are good to go. The capture screen had just three buttons for start, pause and stop.

After capturing your time-lapse footage, you are taken to an equally simple editing page, where you can choose the frame rate that you would like the video to play back at. If simplicity is an important factor for you then you will feel right at home with TimeLapse.

Microsoft Hyperlapse Mobile

And finally there is Microsoft Hyperlapse Mobile. Microsofts own powerful time-lapse software which is fun, straightforward to use and allows you to import an existing video as well as capturing a new one.

Hyperlapse makes it easy to share your time-lapse videos to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram quickly, and also includes a nifty little "selfie lapse" feature for capturing your reactions during a skydive or zip line run.

Each of the apps above have their own benefits and drawbacks and the best way to find which one works for you is to give each of them a try. If you own an Android phone which includes its own time-lapse app, such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 then you may find the app has all of the features you need.
