Day centre in Tiverton | Cosmic Skip to main content

Date of event: Friday 7th February 2014

On Friday the 7th February, Cosmic visited a day centre in Tiverton, Devon, to show the attendees there how they could benefit from the use of iPad’s. For example, to help them bring up memories from their pasts. There was one client that we had a particular impact on. He had suffered with dementia for a long time and could only recall events from very early in his past. He had little memory of his family apart from his Grandfather, Lance Calkin, who was a portrait artist in the late 19th and early 20th Century. He had painted portraits of many people including George V.

Although he was very hesitant about using the iPad at first I decided to search for his Grandfathers name on Google and one of the first websites that we found was entirely about his Grandfather and his family. After looking through the website, a lot of memories were brought up about the attendee’s family. As we looked down through the list of family members, he found himself, and recalled memories of his family that were recorded on the website. His siblings, parents, aunts and uncles were all there on the page and a lot of memories were raised about them that he hadn’t been able to remember for a long, long time. It was an emotional time for everyone attending the iPad session, especially for the client. Tears were shed and smiles were made as he remembered long lost reminiscences about each member of his family that he grew up with. We even found a colour portrait that his Grandfather had painted of his mother called ‘The Young Shepherdess’! It was a brilliant day for Cosmic and for everyone who attended that day. It also exposed the proof that technology really can help in all sorts of ways.
