In March 2013, Cosmic embarked on a new digital apprenticeship pilot scheme in collabration with Bicton College.
The scheme offered six young people a chance to work on and grow their skills in Digital IT. We feel this was a unique opportunity for these young people, not only are they gained a level 2 apprenticeship in Digital Skills and IT, but they are also getting a chance to work with a highly skilled team of experts in numerous areas of IT, such as, training, social networking, web design, e-marketing and technical support and on top of that they were given training and mentoring, by some of the best UK digital businesses, including Mole Valley Farmers and Yarlington Housing Society.
Julie Hawker, Cosmic's Joint Chief Executive said:
This is a different kind of apprenticeship and we aim to ensure that the apprentices learn as much as they can during their 12 month placement with Cosmic. Our customers will also benefit from this scheme as we will be developing service packages that the apprentices can offer at affordable prices.
The long-term plan is to create a 'pool' of young people (and their talent) which will be used to service a growing number of local businesses and organisations. This will not only provide a valuable and affordable resource to local business growth, but will also provide young people in the local area with a set of skills and experience to develop their roles as key in the local economy. These young people will then work across a range of businesses providing them with a high level of direct support and input to their digital engagement strategy, with the aim of increasing their net value on the internet. These young people will become the IT talent pool for the future in the local area providing valuable skills and resource to the local economy.
